AS IF: Clemence Ellery was founded in 2017 by five partners. Tell me about the inspiration for this partnership, and is there a Clemence Ellery?
Valencia Tanoesudibjo: The name came up as we were looking for something elegant yet unique and memorable, and we also wanted a name with meaning—we understand that naming anything must be done with meaning. The name Clemence means timeless, and Ellery means joy; timeless joy. At the end of the day, we want our customers to have timeless joy with our products.
There are five of you comprising Clemence Ellery, what are your different skill sets?
VT: The five of us bring different skill sets to the table. Natalie and Hendra, who is the only guy in our group, are both graduates of the Gemological Institute of America. Actually, Natalie first approached us to start this venture because she was designing creative jewelry. Our other partner, Jennifer, is more focused on the business side of things, Janice is focused on design and marketing, and I’m more like Jennifer and focus on the business. So, the five of us bring different strengths to the table, and even though there are two gemologists we all design.
Natalie Le: Yes, that’s the unique part about Clemence Ellery, we are not a designer brand, not a name, we are a collective. We want to be progressive, ever-changing, forward-looking, and that’s why we created this. In Indonesia, fine jewelry is very, very conservative. People tend to buy fine jewelry for special occasions, like a marriage where the family will purchase it for the bride or groom. However, I’ve lived in America for five years and I’ve realized that jewelry can be, and should be fun! Jewelry should reflect your personality and not just be something to be bought and placed in a safety deposit box, so I set out to create gorgeous and fun designs. I’ve made ready-to-wear pieces that I think are progressive. I approached Janice first, she’s very creative and she started as our marketing director. Then she approached Jennifer, who is also in marketing, and then Jenn introduced us to Valencia the driver of our business.
