Sou’westers don’t always have an immediate association with fashion, however designers manage to find their inspiration from all walks of life. For his fall/winter 2018 collection, designer Eudon Choi was inspired by the Cornish harbor town of St. Ives drawing inspiration from the modernist artists who settled there post World War I.

In 1928, artists Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson took a trip to St. Ives and met Alfred Wallis, an untrained artist who they felt had a powerful vision. Wood found his inspiration in the artist, who was untrained but authentic in his expression.

Wallis would remain a lasting influence on modernism, and became a cult figure after his death in 1942. His legacy was a circle of artists who aspired to his traditional Cornish way of life and sea-faring past.

Choi respectfully teamed up with renowned milliner Noel Stewart to create a modern take on the sou’wester inspired by the commercial fishing trade. The hats are both waterproof, but still high-fashion, and can be easily paired with Choi’s minimalist, classic designs. Stewart has reached internationally acclaimed status for his hats, which take inspiration from contemporary art and architecture. He certainly knows how to dress a good head.

EUDON CHOI

Born in Korea, Eudon Choi initially trained as a menswear designer in Seoul where he acquired an in-depth knowledge of tailoring techniques and a great eye for detail. He then moved to London, where he graduated from the Royal College of Art's M.A. in womenswear in 2006. Taking inspiration from art, architecture and historical figures, Choi effortlessly combines masculine tailoring with a feminine sensibility. Focusing particularly on menswear detailing, he extracts the essence and aesthetic beauty he uncovers and reworks it. Since launching his eponymous label in 2009, Choi has become a regular fixture at London Fashion Week. He has received numerous accolades for his work, most recently support from the British Fashion Council and the Fashion Trust through the Fashion Trust Initiative, for the second time. Choi lives and works in London.
