Designer Kyungah Min, the conceptual designer behind fashion label Kaimin, is not one for the conventional. She’s known for her avant garde, street style inspired designs that look like a fusion of New York’s most outrageous Fashion Week street style photography and a new age fantasy. However, for spring/summer 2020 Kaimin is going to territories familiar to everyone across the globe, whether they are fashionistas or not: denim.
Min has created SLFF denim (pronounced self), with the focal point of the denim line being the Stratasys x Kaimin 3D-print denim capsule collection with 3D textiles by Fitchwork, marking the first time ever and industrial-quality 3D geometry has been printed directly onto denim. Like many things with Kaimin, it was a more avant garde approach, but Min says her goal is not to push the boundaries of the avant garde. “I’m just designing based on my personal tastes, what I love, and what I want to do. It’s all organically happening,” Min said.
The theme for her latest collection was the evolution of humans, with a campaign launching called Introspective Prism, which features styling to parallel the main line Kaimin. The campaign for SLFF is influenced by the subconscious theories of Sigmund Freud and films including Annihiliation, aiming to expose inner fears and release suppressed identity and desires. Everything might seem carefully thought out, but Min admits the journey to the design process is very tedious for her.
“Honestly, I’m very bad with planning,” Min said. “Inspiration wise, I just randomly get inspired by people or nature or even by air. I just collect inspiration all the time and put it together in a puzzle, then I edit at the end. It’s a bit opposite from many other brands.”

The goal with her new SLFF denim line is to celebrate individuality, and the personal desire to transform into the best version of one’s self; where the capacity to be a dominant force is determined solely by one’s inner strength, regardless of body shape, age, skin color, and gender.
Min’s collections are often described as an intersection of art and fashion, which she sees as a virtually simultaneous fusion. “Fashion is a part of art, and art is part of fashion” Min said. “There’s no boundaries between these two. It all depends on how people interpret the object. I just make things and I don’t want to put any definition on them, because I just want to see things and enjoy how they feel.”
The two overarching design elements of SLFF Kaimin denim are slits and sleek cut-outs, which appear at the waist band of all the denim styles, as well as a removable logo strap that runs down the middle of the seat of all pants and under the collar of all jackets. All SLFF denim is made in Italy utilizing Better Cotton Initiative fabrics. Kaimin’s main collection continues to be made in New York City.
