The first time I heard Lauren Patten sing she had me at her first note. Patten’s singing voice conveys power and emotion reminiscent of the great K.D. Lang. Known for her Tony-winning performance in Jagged Little Pill, Patten’s voice transcends the polished voice of the Broadway musical star and goes into the realm of Rock goddess—raw, passionate, savage. It’s not just Patten’s singing that has propelled her into the arms of the spotlight, but she a gifted actor who can deliver her lines with the same unaffected realness as her songs.  

I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with Patten during an unreasonably bright February day in NYC to photograph her for her first magazine editorial before chit-chatting about her newest project, Death and Other Details currently streaming on Hulu. We also spoke about her career trajectory, queer representation in the entertainment industry which has been designed through the white cis perspective, and what she learned from her music-loving parents.
