Philipp Plein has made a return to his first love, furniture design. While the designer has become known for his namesake luxury label and its blinged-out, contemporary hip-hop artist worthy designs, it was furniture that set Plein on his creative path.

To catapult himself back into the furniture design world, Plein collaborated with the luxury furniture company Eichholtz. Coincidentally, Plein is one of the world's largest collectors of Eichholtz furniture.

Eichholtz worked with Plein to take many of their familiar silhouettes and have Plein put his literal stamp on them. Plein chose to show his collection at High Point Market because North Carolina is one of the largest furniture capitals in America.

Over the past year, Plein delved further into the interior design world starting off by doing interior design for his own homes. As he acquired more real estate he took it upon himself to be the interior designer. When he wanted to expand beyond designing for himself and seriously sell his furniture, he immediately turned to Eichholtz.

“Eichholtz is a very dynamic company,” Plein said. “I’ve known Eichholtz for over 16 years. When I started doing furniture, the founder of Eichholtz and I were showing at some of the same furniture trade shows in Paris. When Eichholtz was acquired by an investment fund, I was on the brink of signing a license with a different company. I called the owner of Eichholtz and he told me to sign with him, and he would talk with the new managing board. The board was convinced immediately and then we got this collaboration.”

Plein was excited to sign with Eichholtz because of their large and dynamic distribution and global network. One of the other primary reasons Plein wanted to work with Eichholtz is because they keep a full stock of their products, so compared to other furniture companies after who will take your money and ship your products up to six months later.

Although it has been years since furniture was his primary focus, Plein found the transition back to the artform seamless.

“Designing fashion and designing furniture are not so far away from each other,” Plein said. “It’s all about creating things and making your dreams come true. I always said for me the biggest luxury is to make your ideas come true. We’re all dreamers because dreams keep us going.”
