Quintessa Swindell is Hollywood’s latest ingénue who is envisioning a more inclusive industry in terms of the projects produced and the characters telling the stories. This fiercely brave, non-binary, and talented multifaceted young actor made their television debut in the HBO series Euphoria for one episode before being cast in a leading role in Netflix’s teen drama Trinkets. Now Quintessa will be seen in the much-anticipated DC Comic new film franchise, Black Adam. They will be seen playing Cyclone opposite Dwayne Johnson in the title role.
I had the opportunity to photograph and interview Quintessa when they were on a trip to New York. We spoke about how Hollywood represents trans and non-binary characters in film and television, their early roots as an actor, why
they swing a sword—literally—their trajectory from a Virginia Beach native to landing one of the most coveted comic universe roles in Hollywood, and the roles they hope will come their way.

“Now I can actively walk through the world with an honest understanding of who I am, and that’s all that matters. There’s no confusion. There’s no misunderstanding with myself.”
