Renaud Pellegrino has transcended far beyond his days as an accessories designer at Yves Saint Laurent. The designer, who has had a cult following for years, is now known by far more than word of mouth. His talents are on display at New York’s famed Bergdorf Goodman department store in celebration of his 35th anniversary as a fashion designer.

Called 35 ans, the collection is a collaborative project between Pellegrino and 11 different fashion illustrators, including Marc-Antoine Coulon, Megan Hess, Jordi Labanda, Blair Breitenstein, Hala Salem, Damien Florebert Cuypers, Kera Till, Suwa Im, Hiroshi Tanabe, Yann Paolozzi, Sacha Floch Poliakoff. The collection highlights one of Pellegrino’s best-known silhouettes, The Julia, a minaudiére style that’s reminiscent of match boxes.

Pellegrino’s goal in collaboration with all of these illustrators was to have ones represented from different countries from Germany to Korea to reflect the different points of sale the brand has. The illustrators were completely free to give their own inspiration and interpretation on the Julia.

“Fashion and art are continuously an osmosis. One gets inspiration from the other, and vice versa,” Pellegrino said. “I get a lot of inspiration from my collection from art because I love different painters. Each season I’m inspired by a different painter or artist. I’ve been told I’m like the sculptor of bags because each bag is a piece of art.”

This collaboration might have involved many different illustrators, but this was not one of those cases where too many cooks spoiled the pot, but, rather, it was very seamless. “With each artist having freedom of expression, there was no grief at all,” Pellegrino said. “They were all free to give their own interpretation of what is fashion and how they wanted to see the collection. The only constraint was the shape of the box.”
