In the show notes for the spring/summer 2021 Couture collection of Schiaparelli, creative director Daniel Roseberry stated that he wanted to challenge the idea of what couture is and should be - and he succeeded. The collection featured beautifully realistic molded leather bodices, intricately beaded dresses and capes, hundreds of thousands of Swarovski crystals, silk faille gowns with almost inconceivable amounts of fabric - all created with a wink towards Elsa Schiaparelli’s surrealist influences.
He also incorporated items not usually associated with couture: wide-legged denim jeans in stone washed silk duchess and a silk bomber jacket. He reimagined items in over-the-top jewelry - oversized gold tooth and pearl earrings, pants and earrings adorned with gold padlocks and a molded, polished leather handbag with envy-inducing 6 pack abs. The end result is not your ‘Grandmother’s Couture’ of years past, but, rather, a new, bold, disruptive and modernized couture for the contemporary woman.
