Millennial actor Zoey Deutch arrived to set with green juice in one hand and cell phone in the other. The set for our photoshoot was artist and documentary filmmaker Maxi Cohen's SoHo loft. It was her groundbreaking, intimate documentaries, ayahuasca guided ceremonies, and photographs and films of water which inspired us to work with Cohen for our cover collaboration with Deutch.

Deutch, who made me agog, caused my jaw to drop and scream with laughter in the 2017 film, Flower, was our choice to grace the cover of our 22nd issue. Deutch was named the 2017 Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future, and has a screen presence unlike any other actor of her generation. With the face of a cherub, Deutch delivers lines with chutzpah and sarcasm like a seasoned Borscht Belt comedienne with a particular dry irony only a nonchalant Millennial can muster. Her outrageous roles in projects like Ryan Murphy's Netflix series The Politician, comedies Buffaloed, Zombieland: Double Tap, and Not Okay, proves Zoey Deutch is today's comedic actor. And like all good comic actors, Deutch tackles the drama genre with honesty and strength. She held her own opposite the incomparable Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, The BFG, Dunkirk, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Don’t Look Up) in the period drama The Outfit. And she will make any viewer fall in love with her in this holiday’s romantic feel-good flick, Something From Tiffany’s, now streaming on Amazon Prime.

For our Issue 22 cover collaboration, we brought together Hollywood’s favorite IT girl with Cohen to present messages from our planet's most precious natural resource, water. The new science of water has been the inspiration behind Cohen's ongoing project, "A Movement in Water", an interactive, multimedia, mobile “museum” of water and public art installation. Through exploratory scientific investigations that brought us breakthroughs in water, Cohen captures the essence of our most precious commodity through photography and film. I photographed Deutch in Cohen's studio as she projected her water films onto the actor. By understanding the message in Cohen's work, Deutch immersed herself into the role, at times looking as though the water overcame her. I also photographed Deutch against a stark backdrop to capture moments of tranquility and movement, which I then merged with Cohen's photographs depicting many different states of water. Deutch became a visceral channel to bring our readers closer to understanding water’s energy.
