This is an odd match that still appears to be made in heaven. Italian luxury fashion brand Gucci and Japanese luxury label Comme des Garçons have come together for a project that has melded the design codes of the two houses in the most intriguing and unexpected way.
While Comme des Garçons is known for their design-led minimal approach to fashion and Gucci is known for its maximalist, decorative approach to style, the two have managed to marry their design codes for a new shopper tote bag.
Based on the foundation of a Comme des Garçons shopper this unique piece is personalized with a Gucci vertical green-red-green web stripe. The shopper, which uses craft brown paper featuring a distinctive plastic ‘shell’ that gives it a contemporary, industrial appearance sits in curious juxtaposition to Gucci’s storied stripe with its equestrian and artisanal history. The result is an idiosyncratic Made in Japan item that combines codes from the two Houses.
The international roll-out of the style will begin on December 6. The bag is currently available through Comme des Garçons and Dover Street Market Ginza as a worldwide preview.
