New York Fashion Week in winter is a ten day festival celebrating the best and brightest the New York Fashion scene has to offer. Unlike the spring/summer season where men’s and women’s runs completely separately, the first three days of New York Fashion Week are dedicated to the men’s shows and designers as the epitome of American menswear. Some very interesting trends came out of the first three days this season.

GENDER AMBIGUITY

Gender’s cancelled, at least if a select group of designers have anything to say about it. There’s a market for clothes that fall outside of the spectrum of traditional masculinity. Modern men aren’t confined to the same clothing restrictions their grandfathers were. A new fashion order is upon us.

DARK SUITING

The trend of darker suiting was seen on the European runways and made its way over to America. A good dark suit is always a nice staple to have in a man’s wardrobe. It looks like minimalism is making a comeback.

EARTH TONES

There’s no such thing as too many neutrals for your wardrobe. Just ask the New Yorker’s infamous for wearing head-to-toe black. Black isn’t the only neutral in the world there is, let’s not forget brown, beige, and olive. The designers this season certainly didn’t.

TIE-DYE

The sixties called, and no, we aren’t giving them their tie-dye back. Whereas fashion always looks to past decades for inspiration, the sixties had its moment on the runway this season making a comeback in a serious way. If they do Woodstock 2.0, the men will be ready.

OVERSIZED COATS

Statement coats, in some form or another, are always a trend in menswear every fall/winter. This Fashion Week it was all about the oversize coat. It’s not big enough if you can’t fit another coat under it entirely. Try again otherwise.
