REPETTO X PATRICK CHURCH FOR OPENING CEREMONY

Artist Patrick Church is known for his use of clothes as a canvas. He’s done everything from thigh high boots to wedding dresses, bringing his artistic motifs and exploration of the human body to a non-traditional canvas. Shoe brand Repetto and multibrand retailer Opening Ceremony have announced a new limited-edition footwear collaboration featuring the artwork of the British multimedia artist.

For the collaboration, Repetto’s signature Ballerino style in beige canvas with Church’s printed title All Over You. Its bold, repetitive and monochromatic pattern against a neutral background explores the concept of human connections and relationships, which have always been a signature theme of Church’s work.

“I love the juxtaposition of my bold artwork placed upon the delicate shoe, the pattern is repetitive and enduring. When thinking about what I wanted to use when doing the collaboration this design to me is timeless, just like the classic Repetto ballet flat,” Church said.

While Church is used to using more ready-to-wear pieces as his canvas, he found using shoes a fun and exciting challenge. “It’s very different because the surface area is much smaller to work with, so I felt like I had to plan out and simply my design to create a bolder impact,” Church said.

The designer chose to use All Over You as the choice for this collaboration because he says, “To me the All Over You artwork is timeless and classic, just like the repetto ballet flat. I feel like they complement each other perfectly.”

The aforementioned artwork is a series of paintings he did specifically to explore the idea of human connections and relationships. The designer has been collaborating with Opening Ceremony for several seasons now.

“We are excited to partner with Patrick Church and a heritage brand like Repetto, that has been such a supporter of the arts from the onslaught,” said Opening Ceremony co-founder Humberto Leon. “Patrick Church is an amazing artist who is a big part of Opening Ceremony’s community and we have partnered with him on multiple projects. I have always wanted to use the Opening Ceremony platform to provide a place for queer artists, so I am especially excited to showcase this new collection.”

The collaboration shoe retails for $325 and will be available for purchase on Thursday, April 18 exclusively at Opening Ceremony stores and openingceremony.com.

To celebrate the launch on Thursday, April 18, Opening Ceremony hosted a celebratory cocktail featuring live performance of art by Patrick Church, who hand-painted Repetto Ballerina shoes for purchase at the flagship Opening Ceremony store at Howard Street in New York.
