Los Angeles-based eyewear brand, Garrett Leight California Optical, and New York-based fashion designer Ulla Johnson’s collaborations is still going strong.

Johnson is best known for creating dreamy, intricate pieces, with her line based on a foundation of natural fibers and beautiful finishing. Her brand has gained a global following and has become synonymous with custom prints, feminine pieces and ease of fit to form.

At her spring/summer 2018 collection at New York Fashion Week in September 2017, Johnson debuted her new GLCO x Ulla Johnson collaboration. The collection is a dialogue around transparency, told through a juxtaposition of materiality.

“We played with the idea of invisible protection, seen in the RTW collection through translucent waterproof nylon,” Johnson said. “Sunglasses form their layer of protection, literally, as well as emotionally, so it all came together very organically. I knew we wanted to do optical as I feel like interesting shapes and colors are always a bit harder to find in optical than sunglasses, so making something bold there felt very fresh.”

Leight, on the other hand, is known for creating more classic, unisex frames, but he realized there was an opportunity to reach a new female customer by collaborating with Ulla Johnson. Craftsmanship and quality were still at the forefront of his designs, but he also took the opportunity to explore a more feminine oversized style.

“Working with a designer that has a uniquely feminine point of view was exciting for us,” Leight said. “Ulla and I share a strong interest in quality materials and detailed construction, so it was a great experience putting together this eyewear collection. We were able to bring our strengths together to create something special for our customers.”

The collaboration is available in both a sun and optical frame. The design comes in four unique colorways; nude with berry gradient tint, tortoise with yellow brown gradient tint, khaki tortoise with olive gradient tint, and black laminate crystal with purple gradient tint. All frames can be customized as optical styles with prescription lenses at any GLCO retail location.
